Tips for Reducing Energy Use in the Summer
As we all know, air conditioning (particularly in the hot summer months), uses up a lot of energy. Besides installing a newer, more efficient air conditioning system, there are other things you can do to help reduce your monthly energy bill.
- Cover your windows. Keep all curtains and window coverings closed during the day to block out the heat. If you have sheer curtains, consider installing ‘black-out’ curtains for more effective sun reduction.
- Ventilate. Open the foundation vents located on the exterior of your house. This not only helps to circulate fresh air and allow moisture to escape, it also prevents the growth of mold. Condensation can forms on pipes and windows when the temperature rises. Moisture plus a lack of ventilation is a good breeding ground for mold.
- Clean debris on outdoor AC fan. Ideally this should be done in the springtime before summer arrives. Remove any leaves, twigs or branches which may have collected on your exterior AC fan. This can increase efficiency by 20%.
- Insulate your home. Many houses in Idaho are under-insulated. Walls, floors and especially attics should be well-insulated to create a tight seal from cracks and leaks. The R-value is a measure of the insulation’s ability to resist heat transfer. The higher the R-value, the better insulation capability it has. A well-insulated house keeps you warmer in the winter by trapping heat and cooler in the summer by preventing heat from entering.
The Importance of a Clean Evaporator Coil
The evaporator coil in an AC system acts as a heat transfer unit. It absorbs heat from your home and transfers it outside. Running through the coil is refrigerant that cools your home. When dirt, dust and other particles collect on the evaporator coil, it acts as a buffer between the cooling properties of the refrigerant and the air. A clean evaporator coil is an efficient one.
